Firstly, Heat it up. Depending on hair texture, heat the curling iron to the medium or high temperature. It’s always possible to go back after a test curl and turn the heat up, so choose medium to begin with if unsure. If curls don’t have enough definition, turn the heat up a little bit until the results are satisfactory.
2. Apply styling product. While styling product is not necessary for creating waves, some prefer to use it to hold the waves. If using a styling product, stick with something that is light and touchable, such as a light hold gel or mousse. Waves are meant to be carefree, so avoid making the hair appear over-styled.
3. Pull together a section of hair about 1- to 1 1/2-inches wide, and about 1-inch long.

Start by wrapping the end of the hair around the curling iron barrel, and roll the section all the way up around the barrel until it is about 2 inches below the roots. For extra waves, twirl the section of hair before beginning to wrap it. Hold for approximately 10 seconds, and then release the hair.
